The Proposal

April 19, 2013: Mark told Kristin that they were meeting his family for dinner at Bouley, a fancy French restaurant in Tribeca, for a 6:30pm dinner reservation.  When Kristin arrived, Mark was waiting outside the restaurant on the phone with his brother, who was calling to say that their parents were stuck in terrible traffic and had to push the reservation back.  Mark suggested they take a walk along the river on the esplanade in Battery Park City, where they often would stroll or run together when they lived downtown.  Kristin almost declined (she was wearing heels AND it looked like it was about to rain!) but decided she was up for it. If she had a slight inkling that something was going to happen (earlier in the week, she had a dream that Mark proposed), she was totally thrown off by Mark's deceptive tricks and calm demeanor.

They finally came to a look out point and Mark suggested they have a seat so Kristin could rest her feet. As they approached the bench, Kristin noticed a bottle of champagne with two flutes sitting nearby (left there by her sister just minutes before). Mark got down on one knee and proposed and an extremely surprised Kristin happily accepted!

But the surprise wasn't over yet! After calling family and friends to share the good news, Mark revealed that he had arranged for an elaborate 18-course tasting menu dinner at Bouley, followed by a gathering of friends and family at Gatsby's (where it all began!), an overnight stay in the Ambassador Suite at the Waldorf Astoria, and a celebratory brunch the next morning with the Shiller & Ferretti families. (He really nailed this one.)

The Beginning

Kristin & Mark may have met in college at Cornell, where they shared similar groups of friends, but who can really remember?  What they do remember well is the night they first met in NYC..

It was a Friday night in 2008.  Kristin didn't feel well, but was determined to make it out to celebrate her good friend's birthday (PS.. thanks, Mimi!).  Mark was visiting NYC to hang out with some college friends, who just happened to be hosting a "power hour" at their apartment that evening.  It was on the couch (Betsy!), drinking Bud Lights and listening to one of Brian's epic "power hour" mixes, that Kristin & Mark first struck up a conversation.  They didn't know much about each other to begin -- in fact, they knew each other only as "Shiller" & "Ferretti" at that point, as their group of friends was accustomed to only using last names or nicknames for everyone -- but the conversation was easy.  Later that evening, on the dance floor at Gatsby's (and much to the amusement of their friends), Kristin & Mark shared their first kiss.

In the weeks to follow, Mark found himself driving back down to the city from Rhode Island more than a few times.. always with another excuse as to why he was in town, but always finding ample time to spend with Kristin.  Shortly after, Mark found out he was accepted to New York Medical College.  In August, he moved down to Westchester and the rest is history!
